I know, but I've spent time thinking and I realized I'd never apologized for it. Recently I've had trouble with a friend not opening up so it made me think of that. So.

[She pauses for a moment, then.]

I guess you mean open up? [Not especially, but that's a habit he's been meaning to break.] ...if you don't mind listening.

I told you all that stuff about malevolence in the Fleet, right? How it turns people into monsters?

I think so, yeah. Dark energy, negative emotion, that kind of thing. Right?

Right. And I told you about how it affects people, how I'm supposed to clean it up, etcetera... And you um, you asked me about what happened to make me turn into...that.

Make no mistake, it was my fault, but...

[Sorey pauses; this isn't just about him, but he cannot tell this to any of the seraphim, and if he doesn't get this out he'll explode.]

...I have...a friend. A seraph friend. Seraphim usually can bestow blessings onto places and people if they're worshiped, but they're not always necessarily...good ones.

[She already thinks it sounds like it was at least partially someone else's fault, but she's going to reserve that judgment until he finishes.]

So they gave you a blessing, I'm guessing?

No! No, he didn't even know he was- I was trying to help him.

This is so hard to explain.

Uh, I'd been adjusting poorly up until then, but I was still managing. But one day he'd gotten hurt, so we armatized- merged kind of, it's a Shepherd thing, so that he could heal up.

He's suffered a lot. But when I tried to take on some of his burden, I couldn't quite...manage.

I'm sorry, is this making sense?

Whatever happened with that, it made it a lot harder to ignore the malevolence in the Fleet. I started worrying and gettimg upset over little things, and I kept everything to myself because I was scared I'd hurt my friends.

It was kind of all downhill from there. It's actually really...really simple. [Embarrassingly simple.]

There wasn't one big thing that pushed you over the edge and made... that happen?

Not really.

I got scared...I left, but it was already happening at that point. [Sorey sighs.] It would make more sense if something big had happened, huh?

Not really.

[He can't see it, but the shrug is obvious in her voice, somehow.]

I mean, little things pile up if you don't deal with them. It happens. Usually it doesn't turn you into a bloodthirsty monster, but it happens.

Back home, denial of your true self and your feelings is very dangerous. After what happened, I'm glad to see that's not something that applies everywhere.

It's dangerous. Just... Usually in a different way.
